Irishwoman Sets History by Reaching the British Open Final

Irish squash player Madeline Perry continued the momentum following her stunning win over world number one Nicol David by advancing to the British Open Squash final. She has just set a record as the first player from her home country to reach that far in the tournament.

Earlier in the week, the fifth seed player was at the brink of losing to David in the quarterfinals. However, her tactics coupled with expert manipulation of the Prince squash racquet helped her bounce back to win the match and progress to the semifinals. In this stage, she faced Alison Waters of England and prevailed in four sets 10-12, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9. Waters is the tournament third seed.

Reaching the finals means that this is the biggest triumph for Perry’s career so far. Last year, she reached the semifinals of the prestigious World Open but lost to David at that time.

This achievement is considered impressive considering that two years ago Perry was at the brink of death following a head injury sustained from the mugging incident she encountered while walking down the street.

This time, her squash training paid off as she mostly dictated the match against Waters to secure the finals berth for the first time. She simply ignored the home crowd cheering for her opponent and stuck with her gameplay throughout the match.

Awaiting in the finals is Australian Rachael Grinham, currently the world number two player and a three-time British Open winner.
